Wednesday brought a bad news for the Indian cricket world. Old partner of Team India’s star batsman Virat Kohli and former fast bowler of Punjab. Amanpreet Singh Gill He is no longer with us. At the age of just 36, Amanpreet breathed his last in Chandigarh. Not only his family but the entire cricket circle is shocked by his sudden demise. Virat Kohli, who once shared the dressing room with him during his Under-19 days, is heartbroken by the news.
Virat Kohli remembered his old friend through social media and paid emotional tribute. Virat wrote on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), “Deeply shocked to hear the news of Amanpreet Gill’s demise. Praying for his family and loved ones. May his soul rest in peace. Om Shanti.” Actually, the relationship between Kohli and Amanpreet was from those early days of cricket, when both were struggling to make their identity.
Cricket career and association with Virat Kohli
Amanpreet Singh Gill made his international debut in 2007 while playing for the Indian Under-19 team. He represented India in 5 Youth ODIs and one Youth Test match. One memorable moment of his career was when he dismissed Sri Lanka’s legendary all-rounder Thisara Perera. However, luck was not on his side and he could not be a part of the 2008 Under-19 World Cup squad under whose captaincy Virat Kohli made India the champion.
It is being told that Amanpreet was also a part of the team of Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in the very first season of IPL. Even though he did not get the fame that his colleagues like Kohli or Manish Pandey did, his dedication to domestic cricket and Punjab always remained exemplary.
Yuvraj Singh and Punjab Cricket Association expressed grief
Not only Kohli, but former Team India legend Yuvraj Singh also looked emotional on the death of Amanpreet. Remembering him, Yuvraj said, “Deeply saddened by the departure of Amanpreet Singh Gill. We shared the dressing room together in the initial days. He was a very calm and hard-working cricketer, whose passion for the game was amazing.”
Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) has also expressed deep condolences on this loss. The PCA issued a statement saying, “We condole the tragic demise of former Punjab cricketer and senior selection committee member Amanpreet Singh Gill. We wish his departed soul peace in peace and strength to the family in this difficult time.” In fact, even after retirement, Amanpreet did not stay away from the game and was serving as a member of the Senior Selection Committee of Punjab.
Contribution and final farewell to domestic cricket
If we look at the statistics of Amanpreet Singh Gill, he played 6 first-class matches for Punjab, in which he took 11 wickets. According to local people and sports experts, Amanpreet was a technically very capable bowler. The reasons for his death have not been officially disclosed yet, but the demise of a fit athlete at the age of 36 is raising many questions.
Amanpreet Singh Gill may not be among us today, but his contribution to Punjab cricket and the Indian Under-19 team will always be remembered. His simplicity and dedication towards the game will always be an inspiration for the new generation of cricketers.
