UK homeowners have been cautioned that certain planned changes may be "illegal" amid the threat of £5,000 fines. Magistrates could impose £5,000 penalties for a significant mistake some homeowners risk making when it comes to altering their gardens.
British homeowners tempted to install seating areas in their gardens across the country have been put on alert by Helen Godsiff, brand manager at leading home improvement specialists, Eurocell. Godsiff advises homeowners looking to transform their garden landscape to always check with their local planning authority - in most cases, the local council - prior to making any modifications. Councils will then make a judgement call based on the risk of flooding, or impact on local ecology.
Should work be carried out without obtaining approval, homeowners could face an abatement notice from the local authority. Failure to comply with this instruction to cease work can result in fines of up to £5,000.
Cautioning UK homeowners over "illegal" plans for their back yards and front gardens, Godsiff, brand manager at leading home improvement specialists, Eurocell, said: "While it may seem unfair to face fines for making improvements to your own garden, planning permission rules exist for a reason.", reports Birmingham Live.
"They help prevent disputes with neighbours and reduce the risk of long-term issues caused by poorly planned projects."
The specialist went on, adding: "That said, many major garden upgrades can be done without planning permission.
"For example, garden rooms are often designed to meet Permitted Development rules, and installing a composite deck below 30cm is usually straightforward."
She continued: "Landscaping can also be carried out in a way that avoids disrupting the rest of the garden or requiring approval.
"Whatever the project, it's essential to research the regulations before getting started.
"That way, homeowners can avoid unexpected fines - or an unwelcome visit from the planning officer!"
