Fox News paused its regularly scheduled programming to air a live breaking news update from Donald Trump at the White House. On Thursday (May 6), the 24-hour news channel discussed some of the biggest stories hitting the headlines. It didn't take long for things to turn political as the US president admitted that his phone got him into trouble with his wife, Melania.
The Republican leader admitted that he accidentally called the First Lady "Melody", sparking health fears online. He claimed that spell-check would change his wife's name while he was writing posts on Truth Social, which he wouldn't always notice because of his fast-paced job.
He explained: "I love the name Melody, but for a long time they have spell correct and word correct, and these crazy machines that we use to put out Truths, they used to be called Tweets. But every time I wrote Melania it would correct it to Melody.
"So I'd talk about her [online], and I'd say, 'Melania is fantastic' and 'Happy Mother's Day, Melania, our great First Lady Melania'. But it would spell-correct and word-correct to Melody.
"And sometimes I wouldn't proofread it, and I would just get absolutely decimated [online]. They'd say, 'He didn't know the name of his wife,' and I'd say, 'What the hell is wrong with this machine?' because I didn't know about that little feature, but I got that corrected eventually."
He then bizarrely claimed that he called in the military to fix the spell-check function on his devices so that he wouldn't suffer that mistake again. He chuckled: "You know who corrected it? The military. I said, 'Come here, correct this. You're killing me'.
"So I've had to explain it to you this way, I apologise," he concluded. It didn't take long for viewers to flock to social media to share their suspicions over this confusing admission online. Some feared that the president was showing signs of health decline, raising questions about his cognitive abilities and sparking fears of dementia.
One person joked: "I've got GREAT DEMENTIA, a lot of people say it. I don't remember WHO SAID IT, because MY DEMENTIA IS TREMENDOUS! BTW, have I told you about my AMAZING DEMENTIA?!"
Another suggested Mr Trump was "sundowning", referring to the dementia-related behaviours - including increased confusion, agitation, anxiety, and pacing - that occur in the late afternoon or early evening.
A third mocked: "He needed the military to fix autocorrect? He could have given it to one of his grandkids or his genius sons, who knew how to turn on a computer." Meanwhile, others took comfort in the easy mistake that even the president suffers from.
One user penned: "Super comforting to hear how the person who holds the highest office in our government doesn't know about spell-check." Another agreed: "If you know, you know! It even happens to our president. That's so funny."
A third echoed: "Even the president fights autocorrect. 'Absolutely decimated' over a Melody/Melania typo is very relatable, honestly."
