Manchester United are once again being linked with a move for Atalanta star Ederson, with reports suggesting they could beat Atletico Madrid to the midfielder's signature. The Red Devils are anticipated to be linked with a number of midfield targets this summer as they prepare for their return to Champions League football.

United sealed their place in Europe's premier club competition with a victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford, clinching qualification with three fixtures still remaining this season.

The club are already being touted with several prospective signings ahead of the summer window, particularly in the centre of the park, with Casemiro widely expected to depart when his contract runs out at the end of the campaign.

Ederson has previously been mentioned as a target for Old Trafford, and a fresh development has now emerged regarding the Brazilian's future.

Italian outlet Calciomercato has reported that United have entered the running to secure Ederson's services, with the player having previously appeared destined for Atletico Madrid.

The report claims that the La Liga club reached a 'verbal agreement' with Ederson to sign the 26-year-old this summer, yet had failed to agree a transfer fee with Atalanta.

The Serie A side are said to be holding out for as much as €50 million (£43.2m) for Ederson - a figure United are reportedly in a position to meet. United are named in the report as having identified Ederson as the player they wish to bring in to replace Casemiro, with their interest said to be 'intensifying' over recent days.

Casemiro recently offered a fresh update regarding his future, dismissing any speculation that he might stay at United after confirming his departure from the club earlier this year.

"I don't think there's a chance," Casemiro told ESPN. "There's no chance. Mostly because of what I said, you know? Go out the big door.

"I think it was four beautiful, wonderful years and I am eternally grateful not only to the club, but to the fans. But I think I have to leave in good terms, I have to go out on top.

"I will be an eternal United fan here in England and I just have to thank all the love from the fans."

United have three Premier League fixtures remaining this season before focus shifts to the summer transfer window.

The Reds travel to face Sunderland this weekend before welcoming Nottingham Forest to Old Trafford, then rounding off their campaign with an away trip to Brighton.
