R. Madhavan, fondly known as Maddy among fans, has built a successful career across Tamil, Hindi and Telugu cinema over the years. From emotionally intense films to light-hearted entertainers, the actor has managed to strike a balance that very few stars achieve. In 2026, Madhavan was also honoured with the Padma Shri for his contribution to the arts. But there was a phase in his career when the actor found himself mentally exhausted after doing back-to-back serious films. Interestingly, it was a simple piece of advice linked to Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan that helped him change his perspective.
During an old conversation with Shobhaa De, Madhavan recalled signing the 2006 Tamil comedy Rendu at a time when he was feeling creatively drained. The actor had been busy with emotionally heavy and socially relevant films, which required intense preparation and emotional investment.
What career advice did Abhishek Bachchan give to Madhavan?
Speaking about that period, Madhavan said he had become tired after constantly researching and working on serious subjects related to cinema and storytelling. That was when filmmaker Sundar C approached him with Rendu. According to Madhavan, the director simply asked him to trust the project, avoid overthinking the script and just have fun making the film for 50 days.
The actor admitted that the experience turned out to be refreshing for him. He further added, "Actually, it was Abhishek Bachchan who told me to go and enjoy all films. He had learnt it from his father. I took his advice to heart and enjoyed Rendu. You can't be doing Kannathil Muthamittal or Anbe Sivam every day."
Taking the advice seriously, Madhavan said he allowed himself to relax while working on Rendu and genuinely enjoyed the process. He also realised that actors cannot keep doing emotionally demanding films all the time. Referring to critically acclaimed projects like Kannathil Muthamittal and Anbe Sivam, the actor suggested that balancing serious cinema with lighter entertainers is important for creative growth and mental balance.
Released in 2006, Rendu was directed by Sundar C and produced by Khushbu Sundar. The film featured Madhavan in dual roles alongside Reema Sen and Anushka Shetty. The movie also marked Anushka Shetty’s debut in Tamil cinema. Known for its comedy and commercial entertainment elements, the film was very different from the intense dramas Madhavan had become associated with at the time.
On Madhavan and Abhishek Bachchan's work front
Over the years, Madhavan has successfully reinvented himself several times. From romantic dramas and socially driven films to thrillers and commercial entertainers, the actor has remained relevant across generations. Recently, he appeared in projects like Kesari 2, De De Pyaar De 2 and Dhurandhar 2. Reports suggest that Dhurandhar 2 has already crossed ₹1782 crore globally, making it one of the highest-grossing Indian films ever.
Madhavan will next be seen in Legacy alongside Nimisha Sajayan, Gautham Ram Karthik and Abhishek Banerjee. Meanwhile, Abhishek Bachchan is reportedly preparing for King with Shah Rukh Khan, though an official announcement is still awaited. Stay tuned!
