Local elections took place across England, Scotland and Wales, and have been seen as a major test for Sir Keir Starmer and the Labour Government. Before the election, Reform UK was forecast to make massive gains by taking Tory-leaning outer boroughs and even threatening to take Labour-held authorities such as Barking and Dagenham. The Greens were also expected to capitalise on Labour's woes.

Polling by YouGov ahead of the vote suggested Labour could lose six councils overall, with the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats each dropping one.

Reform was tipped to take Havering and was in a neck-and-neck battle with the Conservatives for control of Bexley.

In London, Labour faces being squeezed from both the Right and the Left as Reform and the Greens eat into the party's once rock-solid vote in the capital.

The elections come at a crucial moment for the Prime Minister, who has been battered by the Lord Mandelson scandal and faces growing speculation over a potential leadership challenge.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has framed the vote as a referendum on Sir Keir, urging disaffected voters to back his party.
