Petrol-Diesel Price Today: The prices of petrol and diesel across the country remain stable today. In Delhi, the price of petrol today stands at ₹94.77 per liter, while diesel is priced at ₹87.67 per liter.
Petrol-Diesel Price Today (May 8): Claims suggesting that petrol and diesel prices may rise in the near future are circulating on social media. Reports suggest that petrol prices could increase by ₹10 per liter, and diesel prices could rise by up to ₹25 per liter. However, retail-level fuel prices in the country have remained unchanged for the past four years.
Government Clarification on the Viral Claim
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Petroleum and the PIB Fact Check unit have refuted the claims regarding price hikes currently circulating on social media. Nevertheless, government sources have not ruled out a potential increase in fuel prices in the near future. This is because Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are facing mounting losses; despite a significant surge in crude oil prices—driven by geopolitical uncertainties in the Middle East—retail fuel prices have remained static for four years.
How Much Are OMCs Losing?
According to the latest figures from May 2026, oil companies are incurring a loss of approximately ₹20–₹25 per liter on the sale of petrol. For diesel, this loss ranges between ₹100 and ₹105 per liter. Data obtained from the Ministry of Petroleum and industry experts indicates that, collectively, these companies are suffering daily losses of approximately ₹1,600–₹2,400 crore. Furthermore, losses on domestic LPG are estimated to be around ₹290–₹380 per cylinder.
