In what could be an amazing turnaround for the Mumbai Indians (MI) fans, Rohit Sharma might be slotted to captain the franchise in their upcoming clash against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
The five-time champions are ninth in the points table and are fighting to avoid the wooden spoon. MI have won only three of their 10 matches in IPL 2026. In two of those victories, Rohit registered a half century.
In MI’s last match against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Rohit returned from an injury as an Impact Player, and cracked 84 off 44 balls and his opening partner, Ryan Rickelton, scored 83 off 32 balls as MI gunned down a target of 228 with six wickets in hand and eight balls to spare.
MI were led by Suryakumar Yadav against LSG because Hardik Pandya, the regular skipper, was unwell.
When is Mumbai Indians’ next match?
The next MI match in IPL 2026 is on May 10 against RCB in Raipur.
Who will Become MI Captain vs RCB?
According to reports, MI will need a new captain for the fixture against RCB. This is because both Hardik and Suryakumar have reportedly not traveled to Raipur with the rest of the squad for the MI vs RCB match. While Hardik is unwell, SKY will miss this match due to family reasons, according to reports.
There is also a possibility that Hardik becomes available closer to the match if he recovers from his illness.
Nonetheless, MI should place contingency plans in place for the captaincy department. They could either ask Jasprit Bumrah to lead the side, though with the fast bowler himself searching for wickets that might not be the ideal scenario, or go back to have Rohit captain MI in a stand-in capacity.
Some have suggested Tilak Varma’s name as a temporary option, given he could be a future MI captain.
