Virat Kohli has already built up a massive name for himself in the IPL with regards to run chasing under pressure. Over the years the star man of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru has helped his team in tough situations with composure at the crease and consistent scoring at an exceptional rate. Which is why any time that a run chase falters it quickly comes to the attention of cricket fans around the world.
During RCB's 2026 IPL encounter with the Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow on Thursday the veteran was dismissed for a two-ball duck when his team were in pursuit of 213. The wicket of the run-chase hero immediately brought to mind one of the lowest points in RCB history the unforgettable 49 all out against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2017.

First duck in IPL run-chase since 2017
Prior to his match on Wednesday Kohli's previous duck when batting second in an IPL encounter came nearly 9 years ago at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata against the Knights. RCB were on their way to chasing 132 against a Gautam Gambhir led Knights outfit but it soon turned into a nightmare. RCB collapsed to 49 all out which remains the lowest total in the history of the IPL and despite having Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers in the side they fell to the bowling attack.
Kohli was dismissed for a first-ball duck off the bowling of Nathan Coulter-Nile and for almost 9 years after that batting disaster he managed to avoid any further ducks in a run-chase in the IPL. Until on Wednesday when at the Ekana Stadium with IPL 2026 still in its fancy Kohli had to face Prince Yadav and he only managed to face two deliveries before the bowler pinned him LBW.
The dismissal took the wind out of the sails of the fans and the RCB camp. A dream moment for the bowler to take the wicket of one of the greatest cricketers to ever grace the planet but a major talking point for all those watching.
Kohli's numbers still fantastic in run-chases
Even with the 2-ball duck to his name against the Super Giants Virat Kohli's numbers in IPL run-chases still stand up with the best in the world. This was only his 11th duck in the entirety of his long IPL career. His last duck was in IPL 2023 against the Rajasthan Royals when he fell to the very first ball from Trent Boult. However the nature of the wicket on Wednesday is why the dismissal has become such a large talking point in the cricketing world; no duck for nine years in a row while chasing.
