Today's latest price of petrol and diesel across the country

Petrol-Diesel Price Today on May 8: A claim that petrol and diesel prices may rise in the coming days is going viral on social media. It is being reported that the price of petrol could increase by ₹10 per liter and the price of diesel by up to ₹25. However, retail prices have remained stable in the country for the past four years.

Government's clarification on viral claim

Meanwhile, the Petroleum Ministry and PIB Fact Check have refuted claims of price increases circulating on social media. However, government sources have not ruled out a potential increase in fuel prices in the near future, as oil marketing companies are facing mounting losses due to four years of unchanged retail fuel prices, despite a sharp increase in crude oil prices due to geopolitical uncertainty in West Asia.

How much loss are OMCs incurring?

According to the latest data from May 2026, oil companies are incurring a loss of approximately ₹20-₹25 per liter on petrol sales. Meanwhile, the loss on diesel is between ₹100-₹105 per liter. According to information from the Petroleum Ministry and experts, these companies are incurring a total loss of approximately ₹1,600-₹2,400 crore per day. Furthermore, domestic LPG prices are estimated to result in a loss of approximately ₹290-₹380 per cylinder.
