Instagram End-to-End Encryption: Starting today, End-to-End Encryption for Instagram messages has been discontinued. Now, even Instagram itself can access your messages.

Instagram End-to-End Encryption: As of today, the messages you send on Instagram will no longer remain private. In fact, End-to-End Encryption on Instagram is being turned off starting today. This feature is considered the most secure method for online messaging. End-to-End Encryption means that only the sender and the receiver can view the message. Now that this feature has been disabled, Instagram can read all the messages you send. Furthermore, it will be able to access any photos, videos, and voice notes sent within those messages. Let's find out why Instagram decided to discontinue this feature and what impact this will have on users.

Why Was This Feature Discontinued?

Meta announced its intention to introduce End-to-End Encryption on Facebook and Instagram back in 2019. Subsequently, in 2023, it was rolled out for Facebook Messenger. In December 2023, it was also launched on Instagram as an optional feature. Now, less than three years later, Meta has reversed its decision. The company states that very few people were utilizing this feature, which is why it is being discontinued.

So, Will Chatting No Longer Be Secure?

With the discontinuation of the End-to-End Encryption feature, Instagram chatting will now rely solely on standard encryption. This implies that, if necessary, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) can access the content of your messages. This system is employed by various online services, including Gmail. Now, in addition to the sender and the receiver, the company itself can also access your chats. Consequently, your chats will no longer be as secure as they were previously. Beyond potential third-party access, if data were to be stolen from the servers, your chat history could fall into the wrong hands. Therefore, it is now essential to exercise caution and discretion when chatting on Instagram. Will Hacking Instagram Accounts Become Easier Now?

Disabling End-to-End Encryption will not have any impact on the security of an Instagram account. This feature affects the *privacy* of a logged-in account, not its *security*. The deactivation of this feature does not alter your device's security, the Instagram login system, two-factor authentication, or the strength of your password. Consequently, the risk of hacking has not increased as a result of this feature being disabled. Nevertheless, for the sake of account safety, it is still recommended to use strong passwords and enable measures such as two-factor authentication.
