Thalapathy Vijay’s ‘Operation Majority’: Will one MLA change the fortunes of Tamil Nadu?

The politics of Tamil Nadu is currently standing at a point where the value of every seat and every MLA has become like gold. Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party ‘Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam’ (TVK) may have surprised everyone in the election field, but crossing the threshold of power still remains a big challenge for him. To reach the magical figure of majority, Vijay has now turned towards smaller parties and in this connection his party has contacted Kamaraj S, the lone MLA of TTB Dhinakaran’s party AMMK.

In fact, in the 234-seat assembly, Vijay’s party has emerged as the largest party with 108 seats, but it is still 10 steps away from the figure of 118 required to form the government. However, after the support of 5 Congress MLAs, this gap has come down to 5, but the ongoing deadlock between Governor RV Arlekar and TVK is not ending. Raj Bhavan is currently not confident that Vijay will be able to provide a stable government without a clear majority.

AIADMK MLAs ‘barricaded’ in Puducherry resort

Now ‘Resort Politics’ has also entered the politics of Tamil Nadu. Fearing a split among the MLAs, AIADMK has shifted them to a private resort in Puranakuppam, Puducherry to save their clan. It is being told that party general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami himself has reached the resort to save his 28 MLAs from any kind of political pressure or horse-trading.

There is talk in the political circles that TVK is also eyeing the disgruntled MLAs of the opposition. This is the reason why both DMK and AIADMK parties are very cautious about their MLAs. DMK has given strict instructions to all its MLAs not to leave Chennai.

Ball in the court of VCK and Left, Stalin’s ‘wait and watch’

Whether the path to victory will be easy or not now largely depends on VCK and leftist parties. A high-level meeting is scheduled to be held on Friday under the chairmanship of VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan, in which the final decision on support will be taken. In fact, DMK chief MK Stalin has surprised everyone by giving his younger associates the freedom to take decisions according to their interests.

DMK says that they do not want a re-election situation in the state and the priority is to form a stable government. However, Stalin has authorized himself to take emergency decisions, which is an indication that if the equations go awry, the DMK can also make a big play.

The litmus test of victory in Raj Bhavan

The round of meetings between Vijay and Governor RV Arlekar is going on since Wednesday. According to sources, the Governor has bluntly asked Vijay that how will he reach the floor test without a clear majority and which parties’ support letters he has. Vijay has assured to prove his majority in the House, but the Governor has already asked for a concrete list of support before taking oath.

After 62 years, Vijay has created history by defeating the two pillars of Dravidian politics (DMK and AIADMK), but to reach the seat of power, he will have to win many more battles on the political front.
