New Delhi: The wait is officially over for West Bengal as the Union Home Minister Amit Shah has confirmed that Suvendu Adhikari will be the state’s next Chief Minister. Adhikari is set to succeed his former mentor, Mamata Banerjee, following a high-stakes election where he secured a massive personal victory by winning both the Nandigram and Bhabanipur seats defeating Banerjee on her home turf by more than 15,000 votes.

New leadership and Deputy race ongoing

As the BJP moves to form the government, reports indicate a strategic shift with the potential appointment of two Deputy Chief Ministers to assist Adhikari. This would be a landmark decision as Bengal has not seen a deputy leader in over two decades, dating back to Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s tenure in the late ’90s.

To ensure regional and demographic balance, the party is reportedly considering Agnimitra Paul, the winner from Asansol Dakshin for one of the deputy roles. If appointed she would become the first woman in the state’s history to hold the post. The second deputy is expected to represent North Bengal with Siliguri’s Shankar Ghosh emerging as the top contender. Both leaders have already held discussions with Amit Shah to finalise these roles.

Grand oath ceremony at Brigade Parade ground

The new government is scheduled to take the oath of office tomorrow at 11 am at Kolkata’s iconic Brigade Parade Ground. The event is expected to be a massive show of strength attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi several state Chief Ministers and a long list of celebrities and industrialists.

While the formal election of the legislative party leader takes place this evening with state chief Samik Bhattacharya expected to officially propose Adhikari’s name the focus is already on the grand ceremony. The event marks a historic turning point for Bengal’s political landscape as the BJP prepares to take the reins after historic triumph over All India Trinamool Congress.
