Manipal: The Atradi-Hirebettu route, one of the district's key connecting roads, is currently in a state of neglect, sparking public outrage. With the monsoon on the horizon, the drains in this area are overflowing with silt and waste, raising fears of potential disasters.
Drains turned into dumping yards
From Atradi to Hirebettu Junction, the roadside drains are choked with waste and silt. Wet and dry waste packed in plastic covers and gunny bags are being dumped into the drains, spreading a foul stench. In several places, culverts are blocked by garbage, making it highly likely that rainwater will flood the roads. Along the roads connecting Tatturu and Kabyadi, overgrown vegetation and fallen tree branches have further clogged the drainage system. At some spots, discarded diapers are strewn along the roadside, which are being dragged around by stray dogs and cattle, creating an unhygienic mess.
Potholes on the highway: A nuisance for travelers
As this route is a major highway connecting to Bajpe International Airport, hundreds of tourists and dignitaries travel here daily. Small potholes have surfaced at various points; if not repaired now, they will turn into massive craters during the monsoon, endangering commuters. At Hirebettu Junction, scattered jelly stones and dust pose a skid risk for two-wheelers. The piles of waste and the prevailing stench are sending a poor message about the district's cleanliness to visiting tourists.
Dilapidated Tatturu bus stand
The condition of the bus shelter at Tatturu is pathetic. The stand, built for the convenience of passengers, is surrounded by anthills and overgrown bushes, making it impossible to step inside. The nameplate of the station is hanging precariously, and passengers fear it might fall on someone during a monsoon gale.
Can’t the officials see this chaos?
"This is not just a road issue; it is a question of our health. If water stagnates in trash-filled drains, there is a fear of epidemics spreading. Many people heading to Bajpe Airport use this road, yet do the officials not see the mess here? Drains must be cleared and potholes filled before the monsoon starts. Otherwise, traveling in this area during the rains will be a living hell." — Raghavendra, local resident
