Bank Holiday on May 9? Here’s What RBI’s Holiday List Says About Saturday Bank Closure
Siddhi Jain | May 8, 2026 11:15 PM CST

People planning to visit banks on Saturday, May 9, should first check the latest holiday schedule issued under the guidelines of the Reserve Bank of India. For many salaried employees and working professionals, Saturdays are often the preferred time to complete important banking work. However, this weekend may not be suitable for branch visits because banks are expected to remain closed across most parts of the country.

According to the RBI holiday calendar, Saturday, May 9, 2026, falls on the second Saturday of the month. Under standard banking rules in India, all public and private sector banks remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays every month.

As a result, physical bank branches are likely to remain shut nationwide on May 9.

Banks to Remain Closed Due to Second Saturday

The banking holiday system in India follows a fixed monthly schedule under which banks operate normally on the first, third, and fifth Saturdays, while second and fourth Saturdays are observed as official holidays.

Since May 9 is the second Saturday, customers will not be able to access branch-related services such as cash deposits, cheque clearance assistance, passbook updates, loan processing, or in-person account services.

However, online banking, mobile banking, ATMs, UPI services, and digital payment platforms are expected to continue functioning normally.

Additional Holiday in West Bengal Due to Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti

Apart from the regular second Saturday closure, banks in West Bengal are also expected to remain closed on May 9 due to celebrations linked to Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti.

Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti is observed every year to honor the legendary poet, philosopher, writer, musician, and educationist who played a major role in shaping Indian literature and culture. Tagore is also remembered for composing India’s national anthem, “Jana Gana Mana.”

The occasion holds special cultural significance in West Bengal, leading to regional banking holidays and public celebrations.

Full Weekend Impact for Customers

Since banks will remain closed on Saturday and Sunday follows immediately after, customers may face a two-day gap for branch banking services in many regions.

Financial experts advise customers to complete urgent banking work, cheque submissions, cash deposits, or document verification tasks before the holiday period begins.

Digital banking services are expected to remain fully operational during the closure.

Bank Holidays Scheduled in May 2026

According to the RBI calendar, banks across India will remain closed on all Sundays during May 2026, including:

  • May 3
  • May 10
  • May 17
  • May 24
  • May 31

In addition, banks will remain closed on:

  • May 9 — Second Saturday and Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti
  • May 23 — Fourth Saturday

Several state-specific holidays are also scheduled throughout the month.

Other Important Bank Holidays in May

Certain states may observe additional banking holidays on special regional occasions and festivals.

Some key dates include:

  • May 16 — State Day celebrations in select regions
  • May 26 — Kazi Nazrul Islam Jayanti in some states
  • May 27 and May 28 — Eid al-Adha (Bakrid/Eid-ul-Zuha) holidays in many parts of India

Because bank holidays can vary from one state to another, customers are advised to verify local holiday schedules before planning branch visits.

Digital Services Will Continue Normally

Even during physical branch closures, most banking services will remain accessible digitally. Customers can continue using:

  • ATM withdrawals
  • Internet banking
  • Mobile banking apps
  • UPI payments
  • IMPS, NEFT, and RTGS transfers
  • Credit and debit card services

Banks have increasingly strengthened digital infrastructure to ensure customers can access essential financial services even during holidays.

Why Bank Holiday Awareness Matters

Bank holiday awareness becomes especially important for salaried employees, business owners, traders, and individuals handling financial deadlines. Missing branch working days can delay cheque clearances, loan submissions, account verification, or other time-sensitive banking activities.

Experts recommend checking the RBI holiday list regularly, especially during months with multiple regional and festival-related holidays.

For now, customers planning bank visits on Saturday, May 9, should prepare for branch closures and complete important work in advance to avoid inconvenience.
