Have both LPG and PNG connections at home? New rules may require you to give up one connection
ET Online | May 8, 2026 11:38 PM CST

Synopsis

Consumers are receiving SMS alerts to surrender LPG cylinders. This is part of the government's 'One Household, One Gas Connection' policy. The aim is to prevent black marketing and ensure fair distribution of cooking gas. Households with active Piped Natural Gas connections are specifically targeted. Customers can check their connection status online or via customer care.

Many consumers across the country have reportedly begun receiving SMS notifications asking them to surrender their LPG cylinders, including connections from Indane Gas, Bharat Gas, and HP Gas. It has gained attention amid the ongoing US-Israel-Iran conflict in the Middle East, which has affected global oil and gas supply chains.

However, the government has clarified that domestic LPG connections should only be surrendered by households that already have active PNG (Piped Natural Gas) connections. The move is linked to the government's “One Household, One Gas Connection” policy.

Why the Government Is Asking Some Users to Surrender LPG Connections

The main objective behind the “One Household, One Gas Connection” rule is to prevent black marketing of cooking gas cylinders, encourage genuine usage, and make LPG connections available to households that truly depend on them.

Authorities aim to ensure that families with PNG access do not continue holding unnecessary domestic LPG connections while others remain on waiting lists or have limited access to cooking fuel.

How to Check Your LPG Connection Status

Customers can verify whether their LPG connection is linked to their mobile number through the official portals of gas providers such as Indane Gas, Bharat Gas, and HP Gas.

Users can also confirm their details through:
  • Mobile apps of LPG providers
  • Customer care helplines
  • Previous LPG booking SMS messages
Consumers are advised to first check whether their household already has an active PNG connection before taking any further action.

Steps to Surrender an LPG Connection

If a household already uses PNG and wishes to surrender its LPG connection, customers can follow these steps:
  • Contact the authorised LPG distributor or oil company
  • Submit a formal surrender request
  • Return the gas cylinder and regulator following the prescribed procedure
