New Delhi: The tension between America and Iran is not showing any signs of decreasing. For the first time after the ceasefire that came into effect on April 7, such a sharp military clash was seen between the two countries. The firing and military actions around the Strait of Hormuz have once again raised concerns across West Asia. The situation worsened at a time when Tehran was considering a proposal to end the war. This conflict may also affect the global oil market and international shipping.
The US Central Command claimed on Thursday that its forces took action against some military bases in Iran. According to America, these bases were being used for attacks that could target warships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The US Army has claimed that this action was completely defensive and America does not want to promote any major conflict. American officials say that this attack was carried out in response to military activities by Iran.
Iran made serious allegations
On the other hand, Iran rejected the American claims and alleged that the American attacks targeted civilians inside its territory. An Iranian military spokesman claimed that two ships entering Hormuz were also hit during the attack. According to Iran’s government media, air defense systems were activated in Tehran after the situation worsened. This indicated that Iran had become alert about a possible major attack. This development further increased the fear of military crisis in the entire region.
Trump’s warning and statement
President Donald Trump, while talking to journalists, claimed that the US Army has completely destroyed the Iranian attackers. He warned Iran that if Tehran continues its provocative actions, America will give an even stronger response.
Trump said, ‘If Iran does not come forward for an agreement soon, we will respond to it in a very harsh and violent way.’ However, he also reiterated that the ceasefire is still in effect. Interestingly, while talking to the media later, Trump tried to play down the entire confrontation by calling it a ‘light-hearted altercation’.
Eye on diplomatic efforts
However, despite the firing and tension, both countries have indicated that they do not want a widespread war. Iranian officials later claimed that the situation had returned to normal, while the US also said that its aim was not to increase tension. According to reports, a proposal has been prepared by America, in which a three-step process has been suggested.
This includes a formal ceasefire, measures to reduce tension in the Strait of Hormuz and a plan to continue talks for 30 days. But many questions are also being raised regarding this proposal. It is being told that there is no clear mention of the main demands of America, which include a ban on Iran’s nuclear program and guarantee of safe navigation in the strait.
The world’s eyes on Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz is counted among the most important sea routes in the world. Earlier, about 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas supply used to pass through here. In such a situation, any kind of military tension in this region can affect the international energy markets. After increasing tension, uneasiness is being seen among the allies of Gulf countries and also in the global markets.
Experts believe that if the situation worsens, its impact may be visible from oil prices to global trade. At present, Iran’s Foreign Ministry has said that it has not yet taken a final decision on the proposal. In such a situation, the eyes of the world are now focused on whether the situation will be resolved through talks or whether West Asia will move towards a new major conflict.
