West Bengal: Subhendu Adhikari meets Governor, stakes claim to form government

Kolkata, 8 May. Subhendu Adhikari, leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislative party in West Bengal, went to Lok Bhavan on Friday evening and met Governor R.N. Met Ravi and staked claim to form the government. Along with Shubhendu Adhikari, many top leaders of BJP state unit including Dilip Ghosh, Locket Chatterjee and Tapas Roy also reached Lok Bhavan.

First Chief Minister of BJP in Bengal Will become Shubhendu

Earlier in the day, Shubhendu was unanimously elected the BJP legislature party leader. Home Minister Amit Shah, who came from Delhi as a central observer, announced Shubhendu’s name in the BJP legislature party meeting. This is the first time in the political history of Bengal, when BJP government is going to be formed and a BJP leader will take oath as the Chief Minister.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, BJP president Nitin Naveen along with top Union ministers and around 20 chief ministers of BJP-ruled states are likely to be present at the swearing-in ceremony, scheduled at 11 am on Saturday at the Brigade Parade Ground in central Kolkata.

Shubhendu said – BJP government will work on the principle of collective leadership

Meanwhile, Chief Minister-designate Subhendu Adhikari said that the new and first BJP government in the state will work on the principle of collective leadership, fulfill all the promises made in the party’s election manifesto and work closely with the Center to fulfill the aspirations of the people.

The priorities of the incoming government were outlined in the legislative party meeting.

Addressing the party MLAs after being elected leader of the BJP legislature party in the presence of Amit Shah, Shubhendu Adhikari underlined the priorities of the incoming government and said that the atmosphere of fear in Bengal has ended and the state will now move towards an era of ‘trust’. “The fear has now ended and as Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji has said, confidence has come,” Adhikari said amid loud applause from party MLAs and supporters.
