Google overhauls AI Search: 5 new ways users can 'discover the web'

"An AI response is often just the beginning," the company stated, emphasizing its goal of helping users discover the "richness of the web" through five key upgrades:

1. Deep Dives with "Next Steps"
To encourage users to go beyond the initial summary, Google will now suggest "where to go next" at the bottom of AI responses. These links will lead to in-depth analyses or unique case studies. For example, a search about urban green spaces might end with a link to a specific report on New York’s High Line park, making it easier to satisfy deeper curiosity.

2. Integration of News Subscriptions
In a move to support journalism and build trust, Google is highlighting links from a user's own news subscriptions. If a trusted source you pay for has an article relevant to your AI Overview, it will be prominently labeled. Early testing showed that users are significantly more likely to click on links when they recognize them as part of their existing subscriptions.

3. Firsthand Advice from Real People
Google is making it easier to find "people who have been there." AI responses will now include previews of discussions from social media and online forums. To help users judge the quality of the advice, these links will display the creator’s handle or community name—such as a specific photography forum when researching how to capture the Northern Lights.

4. Inline Links for Instant Verification
Instead of hunting for sources at the bottom of the page, users will now see inline links directly next to relevant text. If an AI summary mentions a specific bike trail's difficulty, a link to a touring guide will appear right next to that sentence, allowing for instant "fact-checking" or deeper reading.

5. Hover Previews for Desktop
To combat "click hesitation," desktop users can now hover over a link within an AI response to see a quick preview. This pop-up shows the website’s name and page title, giving users a better idea of where they are headed before they leave the search page.

Google revealed it is using a technique called "query fan-out" to power these updates. This allows the AI to dive deeper into the web to find the most relevant, high-quality sites rather than just surface-level information.

By prioritizing original voices and making links more visible, Google aims to ensure that as AI advances, the creators and websites that provide the world's information remain at the forefront of the user experience.
