Novak Djokovic faced a surprising defeat at the Italian Open on Friday, losing to 20-year-old Croatian qualifier Dino Prižmić, who is 18 years younger than the 38-year-old tennis star.
This match marked Djokovic's return to competition after a two-month hiatus due to a right shoulder injury. Prižmić triumphed over the 24-time Grand Slam champion with a score of 2-6, 6-2, 6-4, clinching victory with an ace on his first match point. Djokovic had not played since his loss to Jack Draper in March at the Indian Wells tournament in California. Injury and Performance Djokovic's shoulder injury was apparent during the match, as he was seen with taping on his right shoulder when changing shirts between sets. Despite his discomfort, he chose not to discuss his physical condition, stating he wanted to keep the focus on Prižmić's achievement. Reflecting on the match, Djokovic expressed his desire for more competitive play ahead of the French Open, which begins in 16 days. He noted that while he did not surprise himself with the performance, he found the second set particularly disappointing.
Djokovic's Reflections Djokovic acknowledged that he is not currently at the level he aspires to compete. He remarked, "I see what I'm missing. Late half a step. I'm not definitely where I want to be for the highest level and to compete at the highest level and to be able to get far." He emphasized the importance of playing and starting the season, saying, "Eventually you have to play. You have to start somewhere. I wanted to start earlier but I couldn't. The situation is as it is. You make the most out of it." Future Outlook When asked about his confidence for the upcoming French Open, Djokovic replied, "I don't know," but added with a smile, "I hope so." This match was his only competitive clay-court match before the French Open. Earlier this year, Djokovic reached the final of the Australian Open but lost to Carlos Alcaraz. In a previous encounter, Prižmić had lost to Djokovic in a four-set match at the 2024 Australian Open, and Djokovic praised Prižmić's improved forehand, suggesting he has the potential to go far if he stays healthy.
Prižmić's Achievement Prižmić, ranked 79th, expressed his admiration for Djokovic, stating, "He's my idol. I just played unbelievably today." His victory against Djokovic adds to his momentum after defeating No. 6 Ben Shelton at the Madrid Open last month.
