Suvendu Adhikari will take oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal on 9 May 2026. PM Modi and Amit Shah will attend this function to be held in Kolkata. He has been elected the leader of BJP legislative party.
Suvendu Official Oath: BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari is going to take oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal on Saturday (May 9, 2026) at the historic Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata. The entire ground is being prepared for this grand event and strict security arrangements have been made. An important meeting of the BJP legislature party was held in Kolkata on Friday, in which Suvendu Adhikari was elected the leader of the legislature party. Union Home Minister Amit Shah was also present in this meeting. Amit Shah has been made the BJP's central observer for West Bengal, while Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has been given the responsibility of co-observer.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and many senior ministers of the Central Government will attend this grand swearing-in ceremony to be held on Saturday. BJP is busy preparing to make this program historic. At the same time, the political atmosphere of West Bengal is also quite heated. On May 7, West Bengal Governor R. N. Ravi had officially dissolved the assembly. Here, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has refused to resign. However, according to constitutional rules, she can continue on the post of caretaker until the new government is formed, but she will not have the right to take any major decision related to the government.
Will Mamata Banerjee attend the programme?
The biggest question is whether Mamata Banerjee will attend the swearing-in ceremony of Suvendu Adhikari? No official information has been revealed yet in this regard. There is no constitutional rule that compels an outgoing Chief Minister to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new Chief Minister. It entirely depends on political tradition, mutual relations and etiquette. Many times, as per democratic tradition, former Chief Ministers attend the swearing-in of the new Chief Minister and congratulate him. It is considered a smooth process of transfer of power. However, there have been many occasions when former Chief Ministers did not attend the swearing-in ceremony due to political differences, sour relations, health reasons or other reasons. In such cases their absence is not considered a violation of the rules.
