Major Crackdown on Online Betting in Jhansi: Police Seize Gold, Silver, and Cash

In a substantial operation against online gambling, law enforcement in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, has executed one of its largest crackdowns to date. Authorities raided a location linked to an organized crime syndicate, recovering millions in gold and silver, along with a significant amount of cash. Alarmingly, a police officer from the department has been implicated in this high-profile case and has been dismissed from service immediately.


Details of the Seizure

During the raid, police confiscated approximately ₹1.72 crore worth of gold and silver, alongside ₹18.92 lakh in cash. Two female members of the gang were apprehended during the operation. A senior police official confirmed that one officer involved in the case has been terminated, while efforts continue to locate other suspects who remain at large.


Execution of the Raid

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) BBGT Murthy stated that the operation was conducted based on intelligence gathered by the Sipri Bazaar police and a special task force, targeting a flat in Royal City. Under the leadership of Police Superintendent (City) Preeti Singh and Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Ariba Noman, the raid led to the arrest of Nisha Khan (32) and Yashasvi Dwivedi (24). During questioning, they revealed that they were running online betting operations related to IPL matches and other events, investing the proceeds in gold, silver, and real estate.


Further Findings

According to the SSP, the raid yielded around ₹1.46 crore in gold bars and jewelry, approximately ₹11 lakh in silver, and ₹18,92,300 in cash, totaling an estimated ₹1.72 crore. Additionally, documents related to online betting, a laptop, and 12 mobile phones were seized. Investigations revealed that more than six individuals were involved in the betting operations, including Rajat Singh, a 31-year-old police officer from Hathras, who has since been dismissed from his position at the local police station.


Ongoing Investigations

The police have registered a case against several absconding suspects, including Sumit Sahu, Prabhat Agarwal, Ashish Upadhyay, and Vishesh Bhargav, along with two to three unidentified individuals at the Sipri Bazaar police station. The district police have previously arrested numerous individuals involved in IPL and other betting schemes, confiscating large sums of cash.
