Chennai:After the results of Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026, actor-politician Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has emerged as the largest party in the state. However, due to some seats being away from the majority, there is still suspense regarding government formation. Meanwhile, an old incident to Vijay’s political journey has again come into discussion.
According to reports, in the year 2009, Vijay wanted to join the Congress Party, but due to a condition of Rahul Gandhi, his wish could not be fulfilled. It is being told that if Vijay had joined Congress at that time, the picture of Tamil Nadu politics today might have been different.
Vijay wanted to join Congress
It is said that during the formation of UPA-2 government in 2009, Vijay met his father S.A. Had reached Delhi with Chandrashekhar and the then National Secretary of Congress Gopinath Palaniappan.
At that time Vijay did not want a ticket to contest the elections, but only wanted to become a member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
Rahul Gandhi had put this condition
At that time, Rahul Gandhi was busy in strengthening NSUI and Youth Congress. He advised Vijay to prove himself by contesting Youth Congress elections instead of becoming a party member directly.
However, Vijay, the young superstar of Tamil cinema at that time, did not like this proposal and returned back to Chennai. At that time Vijay was about 34 years old and he was nearing the 50th film of his film career.
DMK pressure also discussed
There was also discussion in the political circles that DMK, an ally of Congress at that time, was not in favor of Vijay joining Congress.
It is believed that due to this political tussle, Congress lost the opportunity to include a big film star in its fold. However, sources close to Rahul Gandhi say that contact between the two leaders continued even later.
What did the Congress leaders say?
Taking a dig at this entire incident, a person close to a senior Congress leader said, “It was good for Vijay that he did not join us in 2009. If he had come then, perhaps he would have been lost somewhere within the party, and not where he stands today.”
old picture went viral
Congress leader Ragini Nayak recently shared an old picture from the year 2009, in which Vijay, MP Hibi Eden and Gopinath Palaniappan are seen together.
By sharing this picture, he replied to those who were questioning the possible alliance of Congress and Vijay. He wrote that the relationship between Vijay and Congress is 12-13 years old.
Vijay’s father gave message to Congress
Amidst efforts to form government in Tamil Nadu, Vijay’s father S.A. Chandrashekhar has given an open message to Congress. He said, "Make an alliance with Vijay, he will give you back the power you have lost in Tamil Nadu."
