The scorching heat and heat waves have not only affected the normal life but have also started having a negative impact on the health of our eyes. These days, a huge increase is being seen in the number of eye infection patients in the OPDs of hospitals. Due to dust, strong sunlight and sweat, problems like ‘Conjunctivitis’ and ‘Dry Eye’ have become common. If you are feeling even slight pain or prickling in your eyes, do not make the mistake of considering it as normal, because this infection can take a serious form.
Never ignore these 5 symptoms, infection may occur
According to eye specialists, eye infections start with very common symptoms. If you are feeling the following symptoms, become alert immediately:
-
Redness of eyes: The white part of the eyes starting to look pink or red without any injury.
-
Constant itching and burning: Desire to rub eyes repeatedly and feeling of burning sensation.
-
Discharge of sticky substance: Eyes stuck with mud or yellow discharge after waking up in the morning.
-
Blurred vision: Feeling of heaviness in the eyes and slight blurring of vision.
-
Sensitivity to light: Severe pain or watering of eyes when exposed to bright light or sunlight.
Why do eye diseases increase in summer?
There are several main reasons behind the increase in infections during the summer season. Strong ultraviolet (UV) rays directly damage the cornea. Apart from this, chlorinated water of swimming pool can also cause eye infections. Dust and allergy causing particles (pollens) flying in the air affect the membrane of the eyes. Experts say that when we touch the eyes with dirty hands, bacteria spread rapidly, which becomes the main cause of ‘eye flu’.
Doctor’s special advice to avoid eye infection
These small changes in lifestyle are very important to keep the eyes safe:
-
Use of sunglasses: Always wear good quality UV protected sunglasses while going out.

-
Avoiding contact lenses: Do not wear contact lenses during infection or while swimming.
-
Cleanliness Attention: Do not share your towel, handkerchief and eye-makeup with anyone.
