In the summer season, the cool air of the fan definitely provides relief, but when the same fan starts making loud noise then the problem increases. In many houses, while the fan is running, ‘char-char’ or grinding sound starts coming, due to which people get worried and even think of calling an electrician or buying a new fan.

However, in most cases this problem is very minor and can be easily fixed at very little expense. By identifying the true reason and adopting some easy measures, the noise of the fan can be reduced at home.

The sound comes from the bearing being dry

The most common reason for noise coming from the fan is drying of the bearing or increased friction in the internal parts. When there is not enough lubrication inside the fan, a grinding sound starts coming while it rotates.

In such a situation, use of machine oil is considered very effective. Machine oil available in the market for around Rs 20 can help in solving this problem.

You can get relief from just 2-3 drops of oil

First of all, turn off the main switch of the fan for safety. After this, slide the cover over the fan downwards to reach the motor part. Add 2 to 3 drops of machine oil where the bearing is installed. This will reduce the internal friction and the fan will start rotating more smoothly than before. In many cases, this remedy alone stops the ‘char-char’ sound to a great extent.

You may have to add more oil, it may be heavy

While pouring machine oil in the fan, it is important to pay special attention to the quantity. If more oil is added than required, it may drip down or reach the winding of the motor and cause damage. Therefore, it is considered better to use oil in limited quantity only.

Every fan has a different design

It is also important to be careful while opening the fan. Not all fans are designed the same and in some models the bearings may not be easy to access. In such a situation, trying to open it forcefully may damage the fan. According to experts, sprays like WD-40 provide temporary relief but cannot provide long-term lubrication. Machine oil is considered a better option in this case.

Loose screws and vibration can also be the reason

If noise is coming from the fan even after adding oil, it could be due to loose screws, blades or excessively worn bearings. Many times, due to loose screws of the fan, vibration increases, due to which noise starts coming. In such a situation, the problem can be solved by checking the tightness of the screws and blades and tightening them.

No need to spend big on small problem

It is not considered right to ignore the sound coming from the fan, but it is not necessary to spend a lot for it every time. This problem can be easily fixed by identifying the true cause and taking small measures at nominal cost.
