Isiah Thomas, a legendary figure in the NBA and a two-time champion, is optimistic about the future of basketball in India. He is set to lead the second edition of BUDX NBA House at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on May 9 and 10.
Alongside four-time NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins, Thomas arrived in India for an immersive fan festival that merges basketball with music, fashion, and culture.
Engaging with Fans and Young Players
In an interview prior to the event, Thomas expressed his eagerness to connect with Indian fans and aspiring players through the innovative format of BUDX NBA House. He stated, "I am thrilled to take on the role of a coach, looking forward to guiding the game and the celebrities, and hoping everyone enjoys the music and culture."
The former Detroit Pistons star, who clinched NBA championships in 1989 and 1990, noted the impressive development of basketball facilities and the increasing participation of young Indians. He remarked, "At the grade school and high school levels, gymnasiums are already in place, and kids are actively playing outside. There is a significant interest in sports. From a coaching perspective, we aim to impart fundamental skills, the do's and don'ts, and how to enhance one's game and teamwork."
The Path to Elite Talent
Thomas is confident that India will eventually produce top-tier basketball talent that can make a mark on the global stage. He highlighted the expanding player base and the enthusiasm for the sport in the country. "The future of basketball in India is very bright. Many young individuals are now engaging with the game, and it’s only a matter of time before someone emerges as a standout due to the vast pool of talent that is already developing," he added.
Cultural Connections Through Basketball
BUDX NBA House 2026 will showcase celebrity games, live performances, BUDX Masterclasses, streetwear displays, and interactive fan activities designed to link basketball with youth culture in India.
The NBA's ongoing efforts in India signify its long-term dedication to broadening the sport's reach through hands-on experiences and grassroots initiatives. Thomas emphasized basketball's broader social influence, stating that the sport can bridge cultural and generational gaps while instilling values like teamwork and discipline. He believes that introducing basketball to India can open doors for youth and strengthen communities through sports.
