Lanka Premier League 2026: Before the sixth season of Lanka Premier League (LPL), Sri Lanka Cricket has issued such rules for player selection which have created a stir in the cricket world. Now, not only their performance and experience but also the number of social media followers will play an important role in deciding the category of players. This rule has surprised the cricket world and there is a lot of uproar. This league is going to start from 10th July 2026.
Strange rules for Lanka Premier League
According to the new rules of the Lanka Premier League, to be included in the icon category, a foreign player must play at least 75 T20 International matches, more than 100 franchise T20 matches and at least 30 matches in the last 18 months. Apart from this, it will also be necessary for the player to have more than 2.5 lakh followers on his social media account. The same condition of 2.5 lakh followers has been kept for the star category also. Whereas, in the Gold category, 30 T20 Internationals, 75 franchise matches, 20 matches in the last 18 months and at least 1.5 lakh followers will be required. Even in the classic category, it is important for the player to have a good fan base.
Salary structure has also been issued in the new rules. Icon and Star players will be able to earn US$ 60,000 to 80,000, Platinum category players will be able to earn $50,000, Gold category players will be able to earn $30,000 and Classic category players will be able to earn up to $20,000. There has been a heated debate on this decision on social media. Many cricket fans say that this rule gives more importance to marketing and popularity rather than performance on the field, which is wrong for the players.
The board changed its decision
According to media reports, Sri Lanka Cricket has now removed the controversial social media followers condition for icon and star category players. There is no longer any mention of the minimum number of social media followers in the updated player registration and draft guide released on May 9. However, it will be mandatory for players to participate in social media activities, fan engagement programs and tournament promotions.
