The NH Department, Bridge Construction Corporation and Border Roads Organization (BRO) have geared up to repair the damaged part of Vikramshila Bridge and restore traffic. The final decision to build a temporary ‘bailey bridge’ on the damaged portion was taken at a high-level joint meeting held on Thursday.

The construction of this temporary structure is estimated to cost approximately Rs 3 crore. Along with the Bailey bridge, a two-lane truss bridge will also be built parallel to the bridge. Design changes: The original 24 meter slab had to be increased to 34 meters due to pillar subsidence, which increased the pressure on the structure. Effect of the jam: The long jam on the bridge that continued for 24-48 hours badly damaged the ‘expansion joint’ and ‘bearing’. Heavy pressure: The pressure of modern heavy vehicles on this bridge, which was built in ancient times to accommodate 6-wheel trucks, weakened the slab.

When will the work start?

NH Chief Engineer Sanjay Bharti said that the detailed report of the experts has been sent to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). A formal letter regarding restoration will be sent to the ministry on Saturday. June 15: The target is to start the work of permanent repairing of the damaged part. The entire project will be supervised by Bihar State Bridge Construction Corporation. Construction of Bailey Bridge will prove to be a ‘lifeline’ to connect the broken connectivity between Bhagalpur and Navgachia.
