Chennai. In Tamil Nadu, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) on Saturday evening announced its unconditional support to Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) to form the government. This step of VCK put an end to the political tussle that had been going on for the last one week regarding the formation of a new government in the state. VCK, the political party led by Thol Thirumavalavan, was in a dilemma for the past few days over the issue of supporting TVK.

Although it has only two MLAs in the 234-member assembly, but due to lack of clarity in its stand, TVK was facing difficulty in gaining majority but now after the announcement of support, TVK and its leader Joseph Vijay have achieved the magic figure of 118 MLAs required to form the government. The announcement was made after VCK leader Thirumavalavan submitted the letter of support to TVK election campaign management general secretary Adhav Arjuna.

After receiving the letter of support, Arjuna told the media, “Vijay, Vijay, Vijay. I thank the leaders of Congress, CPI, CPI(M) and my political guru Thirumavalavan. Democracy will be protected and our leader Vijay will be the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.”

It is noteworthy that actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay’s party TVK won 108 seats in its very first election, although due to winning the election from two seats, technically they had 107 MLAs and they needed 11 more members for majority.

To fill this gap, Vijay approached the opposition alliance partners, as a result of which Congress with its 5 MLAs left DMK and supported TVK, while CPI(M) and CPI decided to extend outside support with their 2 MLAs each.

Ultimately with the unconditional support of 2 VCK MLAs the total number of TVK alliance reached 118 (107 5 2 2 2), which is the magic figure required to form the government. There was a lot of curiosity since morning regarding the decision of VCK.

Thirumavalavan had postponed his decision in the morning, leading to uneasiness in political circles. However, by evening he confirmed the support of two MLAs. According to reports, this support has come after much intense discussion and political bargaining. Now the Governor will formally invite Vijay to form the government, after which the date for the swearing-in ceremony will be decided.
