New Delhi. Punjab Power, Industries, Investment Promotion and Local Bodies Minister Sanjeev Arora was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Saturday after questioning in an alleged money laundering case. According to sources, ED had raided their premises in the morning, after which this action was taken a few hours later. However, it has not been officially confirmed till evening.
According to ED sources, Arora is accused of large-scale money laundering by showing fake GST purchases of mobile phones worth more than Rs 100 crore through his company. The investigating agency claims that later round-tripping of illegal money was done from Dubai to India through export of these mobile phones.
According to the agency, fake GST purchase bills were obtained from non-existent firms in Delhi, on the basis of which fake Input Tax Credit (ITC), GST refund on exports and duty drawback were availed. This caused loss to the government treasury and earned personal profits.
At around 5 am on Saturday morning, the ED team raided the official residence of Sanjeev Arora located in Chandigarh Sector-2. During the action, about eight vehicles of ED officers were seen parked outside the residence. Apart from this, searches were also conducted at a total of five places in Delhi, Gurugram and Chandigarh. These are said to include the offices of Hampton Sky Realty Limited and Arora’s family residence.
Earlier in the month of April also, ED had raided Mr. Arora and his associated companies under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). At the same time, ED action has also been taken against him in the money laundering case to alleged misuse of industrial land in the year 2024.
Arora is counted among the influential ministers of the Bhagwant Mann government and is considered to have played an important role in strengthening the government’s relations with industrialists. Here, Aam Aadmi Party has termed this action as political vendetta. The party leadership, including national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, have stood in support of Arora and said that the ED is being misused for political gains.
