After 5 days of political turmoil, secret DMK-AIADMK stir, 4 meetings with the Governor and last minute support, TVK chief Vijay is finally going to become the new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. By garnering a tally of 121 MLAs with VCK, Congress, CPI(M) and IUML, Vijay challenged the hold of 70-year-old Dravidian politics. Now everyone's eyes are on the floor test of May 13.

Magic figure of majority: When 'arithmetic' dodged victory
In the election results, TVK had emerged as the largest party with 108 seats, but it was 10 steps away from the figure of 118 required for majority. In the last 5 days, Vijay made three trips to Raj Bhavan, but had to return empty handed every time. Sometimes he had the support of 113 MLAs, sometimes 116. The suspense deepened when the smaller parties of the alliance – VCK and IUML – remained adamant on their demands. There came a time when discussions started in the corridors that arch rivals DMK and AIADMK might join hands, due to which panic spread in the TVK camp.
current seat math
- TVK-108
- Congress-5
- CPI-2
- CPI(M)-2

The heartbeats of the supporters stopped, but within minutes the Governor canceled his Kerala tour. Vijay staked claim for the fourth time with Congress, Left parties and regional allies and finally got the invitation to form the government.

End of Dravidian supremacy: The first 'third way' since 1967
Vijay becoming the Chief Minister will change the political geography of Tamil Nadu. This is the first time since 1967 that a government is coming to power which is neither part of the DMK nor the AIADMK. This is indicative of a fundamental change in the mindset of voters, where they were now looking for a 'secular and democratic' alternative to traditional Dravidian politics. The presence of veteran leaders like Rahul Gandhi at the swearing-in also shows the national importance of this new government.

Challenge is still pending: 'Agnipariksha' will be faced on 13th May
Even though Vijay will take oath as the Chief Minister today, the real challenge will be in the Assembly on May 13. The Governor has directed him to pass the floor test. Vijay has won from two seats, and as per rules he will have to give up one seat. In such a situation, keeping the effective strength of the Assembly and the alliance partners united will be no less than a big test for Vijay. Today is not only a day of celebration for Vijay's fans, but it is also the beginning of a new chapter for the democracy of Tamil Nadu. Will this 'victory' bring lasting change? The time to come and the floor test of May 13 will answer this.
