Sorana Cîrstea pulled off one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 season by defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 to reach the Round of 16 at the Italian Open in Rome.
The comeback win marked Cîrstea’s first-ever victory over a reigning world No. 1 and one of the biggest moments of her farewell season. Sabalenka looked dominant early, but Cîrstea turned the match around with aggressive baseline play and relentless pressure.
The Belarusian also took a medical timeout for a lower-back issue. Cîrstea will next face Linda Nosková for a quarter-final spot.
