Petrol prices may be hiked

Although the general public has so far been spared the turmoil that the conflict in West Asia has caused to the global crude oil market, it seems that this will not be possible for much longer. This is because despite several steps taken by the government, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the three state oil companies Indian Oil, Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum to bear the losses incurred from the sale of petroleum products. According to Petroleum Ministry estimates, these three companies suffered a combined loss of ₹30,000 crore in the months of March and April alone. If the Central Government had not helped them by reducing the excise duty, this loss would have increased to ₹62,500 crore.
