Indian Railway Rule: Many people assume that having a confirmed train ticket allows them to commence their journey from any station; however, railway regulations state otherwise. A minor oversight could result in the forfeiture of your seat.
Indian Railway Ticket Booking Rule: What would you do if you had booked a confirmed train ticket months in advance, only to have a Ticket Examiner (TTE) impose a hefty fine on you during the journey? This may sound bizarre, but a similar incident recently came to light. A woman was traveling in an AC 2-Tier coach with a confirmed ticket; yet, railway officials levied a fine of ₹2,560 against her.
You are likely wondering: why exactly did this happen?
The most surprising aspect of this case was that the woman's ticket was entirely valid, and the fine amount was nearly double the actual fare of her ticket.
Where Did the Error Occur During the Journey?
It is worth noting that the woman had booked her ticket from Raika Bagh Junction (RKB); however, she did not board the train at that station. Instead, she boarded the train approximately two hours later at Pali Marwar station. During this interval, the railway staff marked her seat status as "NT"—signifying "Not Turned Up." This status indicates that the passenger failed to board the train at their designated station, following which the railways reallocated her seat to a passenger holding an RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) ticket.
Why Was the Fine Imposed?
When the woman eventually reached her seat on the train, the TTE informed her that, in accordance with railway regulations, her seat had already been assigned to another passenger. Since the woman had boarded the train from a station other than the one specified on her ticket—without officially updating her boarding station—this was deemed a violation of the rules, resulting in the imposition of the fine.
What Is the Railway Rule?
According to Indian Railway regulations, a passenger must board the train specifically from the station designated on their ticket.
If you wish to change your boarding station, you must do so *before* the final reservation chart is prepared.
You can modify your boarding station through the IRCTC website or by visiting a railway reservation counter. The boarding point can be changed up to 30 minutes before the train's departure.
However, if a passenger fails to comply with these rules, the Railways may treat the seat as vacant and allot it to another passenger.
