India has once again presented an example of its strength to the world by successfully testing the advanced Agni-5 missile. Giving information from the Defense Ministry, it was said that Multiple Independently Targetable Re-Entry Vehicle i.e. MIRV technology has been used in this missile. With the help of this technology, this missile can simultaneously target enemy targets located at different places at one go. Along with this, it is also capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads.
Successful test conducted in Odisha
This test of Agni-5 missile was conducted on Friday (8 May 2026) from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha. According to the Defense Ministry, during this test, the missile was launched with multiple payloads and targets located at different places in the Indian Ocean region were successfully targeted. The ministry said that all the objectives of the mission were completely successful. To continuously monitor the launch of the missile, several tracking systems and telemetry stations on land and sea were used. These systems recorded complete information from the launch of the missile to its reaching the target.
Agni-5 missile with MIRV technology
It is noteworthy that India tested Agni-5 missile with MIRV technology for the first time in March 2024. That mission was named Mission Divyastra by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With this technology, India has joined the list of select countries which have MIRV missile system. Countries like America, Britain, France, Russia and China are included in this list. The range of Agni-5 missile is more than 5,000 kilometers. A three-stage solid fuel engine has been used in it. Missiles with MIRV technology are considered more powerful than normal missiles because they have the ability to carry multiple nuclear warheads simultaneously.
Defense Minister congratulated DRDO and Army
After this successful test, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO and Army. He said that this achievement will further strengthen the security preparedness of the country and will help in dealing with the increasing threats. With this test, India has once again proved that it has the capability to attack multiple targets with a single missile. Although the government has not disclosed how many warheads the MIRV version of Agni-5 can carry, defense experts believe that it may be capable of carrying four or five warheads.
Many other versions of DRDO Agni missile
DRDO has also made many other versions of Agni missile. Among these, the range of Agni-1 is 700 kilometers, Agni-2 is 2,000 kilometers, Agni-3 is 3,000 kilometers and Agni-4 is 4,000 kilometers. Completely indigenous technology has been used in the MIRV system of Agni-5. Indian avionics and high accuracy sensors have been installed in it. The special thing is that the first test conducted in 2024 was led by a woman scientist of DRDO and many women scientists were included in that team.
India’s nuclear policy based on no first use
India’s nuclear policy is based on no first use. This means that India will not launch a nuclear attack first, but if there is a nuclear attack on India then it will be responded to on a very large scale. Only the political leadership can take the decision to use nuclear weapons in India. The Prime Minister is the head of the Political Council of the Nuclear Command Authority. India has the capability to launch nuclear attacks through all three routes: land, air and sea. Recently, the Indian Navy has inducted its third nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine INS Aridman into service. This has further strengthened India’s maritime security and nuclear power. According to the report of Stockholm International Peace Research Institute i.e. SIPRI, by January 2025, India had about 180 nuclear warheads. In the report, China is estimated to have 600 nuclear warheads and Pakistan to have 170 nuclear warheads.
