During the conversation with Jaishankar, Araghchi also raised the issue to the role of BRICS.

Iran’s Foreign Minister expected to visit India next week

Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi is likely to visit India for the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting to be held on May 14-15. There was some uncertainty regarding his participation but now it is understood that Iran has informed India that this visit is currently included in the itinerary of the Foreign Minister. China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, is not likely to attend the event. The reason for this is that the dates of the BRICS meeting are clashing with an important summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping where Wang Yi’s presence is mandatory.

Why is this meeting important?

India is chairing BRICS in 2026. This year’s theme is "Building for resilience, innovation, collaboration and sustainability" (Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability). This theme reflects a human-centric approach in which humanity is given top priority. About which the Prime Minister had talked during the 17th BRICS summit held in Rio de Janeiro in 2025.

This meeting will serve as a major platform for substantive discussions on current international issues and strengthening global governance. This meeting will provide an opportunity for important discussions. Especially for those countries which are considered to represent a large part of the global population. As part of the preparations for the 18th BRICS Summit, special emphasis will be laid on strengthening strategic partnerships.

Maria Zakharova said that foreign ministers of BRICS partner countries will participate in several sessions of the meeting. He further said that during his visit to New Delhi, Sergei Lavrov met India’s Foreign Minister S. Will also hold bilateral talks with Jaishankar.

travel dependent on ceasefire

Araghchi’s visit to India will also depend on whether the recent fragile ceasefire between America and Iran remains intact or not. This proposal includes an offer from the US to gradually lift the sanctions, in exchange for which Iran would have to suspend its uranium enrichment program for at least 12 years.

In 2024, Iran also became a member of the group along with Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Araghchi’s visit will provide an opportunity for India to comprehensively discuss bilateral concerns with Iran, the most prominent of which is the disruptions in LPG supply. Instead of joining any military alliance to secure the Strait of Hormuz, India has chosen to resolve matters with Iran through diplomatic means.
