Gulzar's 1975 film Aandhi, starring Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra Sen, is celebrated for its emotional depth and timeless music. The film explored themes of sacrifice, ambition, and love, with the lead actors' chemistry leaving a lasting impact. Interestingly, Gulzar and Sen addressed each other as 'Sir' throughout the shoot, conversing in Bengali, a testament to their unique professional bond.

Released in cinemas on February 14, 1975, Aandhi emerged as one of the most memorable films created by celebrated filmmaker and poet Gulzar. The movie starred the late Sanjeev Kumar alongside iconic Bengali screen legend Suchitra Sen in leading roles. Over the years, the film has earned admiration for its emotional depth, layered characters, and timeless music.

The story revolved around a strong-willed woman who rises in politics while struggling with the emotional scars of a failed relationship. The narrative delicately explored themes of personal sacrifice, ambition, love, and emotional separation. Audiences were deeply moved by the chemistry between Suchitra Sen and Sanjeev Kumar, whose restrained yet powerful performances gave the film lasting emotional impact.

Adding to the film’s enduring legacy was its unforgettable soundtrack composed by legendary music director R. D. Burman. The songs blended seamlessly with the story’s emotional tone and became classics that continue to resonate with listeners decades later. The film’s subtle storytelling style and mature treatment of relationships made it stand apart from mainstream cinema of its time.

During an interview with The Indian Express, Gulzar reflected on his memorable association with Suchitra Sen and revealed the unusual manner in which they addressed each other on the sets of the film. He explained that he often referred to the actress as “Sir,” despite her immense stature in Indian cinema.

Gulzar described Suchitra Sen as an affectionate and approachable individual, very different from the distant image often associated with her public persona. He praised several of her acclaimed Hindi films, including Musafir directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Mamta by Asit Sen, and Bombai Ka Babu directed by Raj Khosla. He believed that both Suchitra Sen and legendary Bengali actor Uttam Kumar never received the level of recognition they truly deserved.

The filmmaker also spoke about the actress’s dignified personality and selective social circle. According to him, she preferred maintaining privacy and distance from unnecessary attention, which added to her aura of elegance and mystery. He recalled that during the filming of Aandhi, Suchitra Sen began addressing him respectfully as “Sir.” Since he considered himself younger and junior to her, he initially objected. However, she continued the practice, and eventually both of them addressed each other in the same manner while conversing in Bengali throughout the shoot.
