In a significant legal case, federal prosecutors in the United States have charged a woman with attempting to extort billionaire Wesley Edens following a brief romantic involvement. Changli "Sophia" Luo, aged 46, allegedly threatened to disclose private images and videos of Edens unless he paid her substantial sums of money. Luo has entered a not guilty plea to several criminal charges and is set to face trial later this year.
Wesley Edens, 64, is known as the co-founder of Fortress Investment Group, co-owner of the Milwaukee Bucks, and owner of Aston Villa. Prosecutors revealed that Luo first reached out to Edens via LinkedIn in 2022, shortly after his divorce. They later met in New York, where a sexual relationship reportedly developed.
According to court documents, Luo expressed her feelings for Edens in a message, stating, "I never told you I love you, and tonight I want to tell you that, I have been restraining my feeling [sic] for you, as I do love you from the bottom of my heart!" After receiving no response, Luo allegedly initiated a series of threats and demands.
Prosecutors claim that Luo sought up to $1.2 billion, which they noted is approximately half of Edens's estimated wealth. She purportedly threatened to share explicit content with his family, former spouse, business partners, and investors, and warned that she would go public with her claims.
One message cited in the legal complaint warned, "I am sure your family and business partners will learn about you and your misdeeds from these interviews and will provide exposure that will taint your record forever." Luo also accused Edens of engaging in sexual acts with her while she was incapacitated, asserting that their encounters were recorded by cameras in her home.
Edens has denied these allegations. In May of the previous year, the FBI conducted a search of Luo's Manhattan apartment, where they reportedly found one mobile phone hidden in a laundry basket and another concealed in a box of sanitary products. Investigators allege that one device contained altered pornographic images with Edens's face digitally superimposed onto another person's body.
Luo was apprehended on June 14 at John F. Kennedy International Airport while attempting to board a flight to China. Court documents indicate that Edens initially consented to pay Luo $6.5 million following a mediation session conducted via Zoom with a former judge, which included an upfront payment of $1 million. Prosecutors suggest that Edens agreed to this settlement partly to avoid public embarrassment and to limit further contact with his family.
According to Luo's legal representatives, she later discovered that she had HPV, a sexually transmitted infection associated with an increased risk of certain cancers, which she attributed to Edens. This led her to renegotiate the settlement, raising her demands to as high as $1.215 billion.
Luo faces four criminal charges, including blackmail and destruction of evidence, and she has pleaded not guilty. She was released on a $500,000 bond and is currently under home detention as she awaits her trial.
