A 57p kitchen staple can help eliminate mould and mildew. With summer around the corner, many of us are beginning to prep our gardensfor the warmer months, turning to quick-cleaning solutions to refresh outdoor spaces.
However, one common method could be doing more harm than good. Sam Jenkinson, from garden building retailer Tiger, is warning homeowners against using pressure washers, as the high-powered cleaning method can cause long-term and sometimes irreversible damage across a range of gardenbuildings and furniture. Instead of reaching for a pressure washer, Sam recommends safer, more effective alternatives that still deliver a cleanfinish. He said: "A simple solution of warm water and mild detergent is often all you need. To remove dirt, algae, and grime without damaging the surface, simply use a soft brush or sponge."
But for more difficult patches like mould and mildew, a 57p kitchen item can be "incredibly effective" - white vinegar. Sam said: "It's something most households already have, and even if you don't, it can cost as little as 50p from supermarkets."
"Spray the vinegar directly onto the affected area and leave it to sit for 10 to 15 minutes. This helps break down the growth without the need for harsh chemicals or high pressure.
"After that, gently scrub with a soft brush and rinse with clean water. Not only is this method affordable, but it's also much safer for your garden compared to using a pressure washer."
Rather than using a pressure washer, Sam recommends using a hose. He said: "A standard garden hose on a low setting is more than sufficient. This avoids forcing water into joints or materials while still washing away residue."
After cleaning garden furniture and buildings, always inspect them for areas where treatment, paint, or coatings may have worn away. If you notice any exposed or faded patches, it's important to reapply a suitable preservative as soon as the surface is fully dry.
Sam said: "Use a brush or roller to apply an even coat, working it into joints and edges where moisture is most likely to get in. Reapplying these protective layers helps shield them from rain, UV damage and temperature changes, keeping it in good condition for longer."
