Currently, the markets across India are buzzing with excitement for Navratri and Dussehra. This year, Dussehra will be celebrated with great enthusiasm on October 19, which marks the day Lord Rama defeated Ravana, leading to the observance of Vijayadashami.
Historical Sites Linked to the Ramayana
Globally, there are various beliefs surrounding the Ramayana and the character of Ravana. One intriguing aspect is the existence of numerous historical sites in Sri Lanka, located at the southernmost part of the Indian subcontinent, that are associated with the epic. Recent research claims to have identified 50 such locations in Sri Lanka that are directly linked to the Ramayana, including a cave believed to house Ravana's remains.
The Cave of Ravana
As many may recall from childhood performances of Ram Leela, after Lord Rama's victory over Ravana, his brother Vibhishana was entrusted with Ravana's body. However, it remains unclear whether Vibhishana performed the last rites for Ravana. According to local beliefs, there exists a cave in Sri Lanka where Ravana is said to have meditated, and it is believed that his body is still preserved there. This cave is situated at an elevation of 8,000 feet in the Ragala region.
Legends of Ravana's Abduction of Sita
Moreover, local lore suggests that near the site where Ravana abducted Sita, there is a waterfall, and footprints of Lord Hanuman can still be found on the rocks in that area.
