Mumbai Indians suffer eighth IPL playoff exit after heartbreaking loss against Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Cricket Gully | May 11, 2026 11:39 AM CST

The 2-wicket defeat against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Raipur formally eliminated the Mumbai Indians from the Indian Premier League. A franchise with a legacy of becoming the champions five times is not seeing early elimination for the first time. Rather, this is the 8th time in 19 years that the Mumbai Indians have not qualified for the playoffs.

While the previous exits marked near misses, the recent exits witness a real low in the franchise. Their history shows that between 2010 and 2020, they were incredibly consistent, missing the playoffs only twice (2016 and 2018). However, the post-2020 period has been more challenging, with four league-stage exits in the last six years.

Here are the times when MI could not qualify for the playoffs:

1 | 2008 (5th place):

The inaugural IPL witnessed one of the most controversial incidents—the slapgate. Notably, MI won 7 and lost the same number of matches.

Captain Sachin Tendulkar missed the first half due to injury. Stand-in captain Harbhajan Singh was banned for the season after the "slapgate" incident with Sreesanth. They even lost their final league match, against Rajasthan Royals, which ended their hope of the top 4.

2 |  2009 (7th place)

Played in South Africa, this remains one of MI's weakest seasons, finishing 7th with only 5 wins. MI struggles with an inconsistent middle order, with JP Duminy being the lone shining star.

3 | 2016 (5th place)

Entering as defending champions, MI finished 5th with a 7–7 record. Injuries to key players like Lendl Simmons and an unstable batting order were some of the major issues that knocked them off. They lost a "must-win" final league game to Gujarat Lions.

4 | 2018 (5th place)

Again as defending champions, they finished 5th with 6 wins and 8 losses. This season marked a series of narrow losses in the final over plagued their early campaign.

They needed a win in their last game against Delhi Daredevils (bottom of the table) but failed to chase 175.

5 | 2021 (5th place)

This was an unlucky disqualification for MI. MI finished 5th on the points table, ending their quest for a hat-trick of titles. Although they finished with the same points (14) as Kolkata Knight Riders, they were knocked out due to an inferior Net Run Rate (NRR).

6 | 2022 (10th place)

This was MI's worst-ever performance, finishing last (10th) for the first time. They lost half their battles in the 2022 Mega Auction and then lost their first 8 consecutive matches, a record at the time.

7 | 2024 (10th place)

This season remembers a trade-in of Hardik Pandya from the Gujarat Titans, followed by a controversial handover of captaincy from Rohit Sharma to him. Team frictions and poor on-field coordination often came to the fore as MI won just 4 matches, finishing 10th on the table.

8 | 2026 (Eliminated)

Even though the positions have not yet been decided, MI lost eight of the 11 matches they played so far. A narrow 2-wicket loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 10 mathematically ended their chances.

Remaining matches for MI in 2026 IPL

The Mumbai Indians have three matches remaining in the IPL 2026 league stage. Despite elimination, the results in the upcoming matches will determine whether they finish at the bottom of the table or manage to climb a few spots before the season ends.

Currently, Mumbai Indians sit in 9th position on the IPL 2026 points table with 6 points from 11 matches (3 wins and 8 losses).
