How did this rumor spread?
According to media reports, this series of violence started from October last year. At that time, suddenly a video and message were shared very rapidly on social media. In which it was being claimed that a mysterious disease was making men impotent. By the time the government and health organizations could control this rumor, fear had turned into violence. According to Reuters investigation, law and order completely broke down due to this infodemic.
Church priest spread rumor
The roots of this entire incident were found to be deeply rooted in social media and local religious institutions. A Reuters report said that dozens of such videos were found in which different priests were seen fanning this rumour. A video from Light of the World, a pentecostal church in the provincial capital Kisangani, shows a taxi driver claiming that Pastor Jules Mulindwa cured him of his illness through prayer. This video of the pastor was viewed millions of times on different social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok. Due to which people’s belief in this rumor became even stronger.
Pastor has been punished
Information is coming to light that this priest has already been punished for making false claims about the treatment of Covid-19. Apart from this, another priest shared a video in which he claimed to have given a miraculous cure. These videos kept circulating on different social media platforms for months and people kept getting misled by it. Now the authorities have taken strict action in this matter and have arrested about a dozen people and sent one person to jail on charges of spreading effluents.
