Shashi Tharoor Stanford India Conference 2026 : In the ‘Stanford India Conference 2026’ held at the world-famous Stanford University in California, a big debate was seen on the political future of India. In this seminar on “India, That is Bharat – Development, Governance and Identity”, veteran Congress leader Shashi Tharoor (Shashi Tharoor) has made very serious allegations against the Modi government’s policies and election process. In particular, he put the government in the cage of the accused on the two issues of voter list in the West Bengal assembly elections and the upcoming constituency reorganization (Delimitation).

What is the secret of ’91 lakh’ voters in Bengal?

During the debate, Shashi Tharoor strongly criticized the ‘State Citizen Registration’ (SIR) process in West Bengal. He said that in Bengal, the names of approximately 91 lakh voters were omitted from the list. Most shockingly, out of these 3.4 lakh people appealed claiming to be legitimate voters. According to Tharoor, of these 31 to 32 lakh people could be genuine voters, but their applications were not heard in time and they lost their right to vote. BJP’s victory in Bengal was by a margin of 30 lakh votes, he said, excluding such a large number of voters is a mockery of democracy.

South India vs North India: The Spark of Political Struggle

Shashi Tharoor said that the issue of ‘Delimitation’ is the most dangerous for the future integrity of India. States in North India are experiencing rapid population growth, while states in South India have succeeded in population control. If seats in parliament were increased on the basis of population, the southern states would be underrepresented. Tharoor warned that this could leave southern India feeling marginalized and the two-thirds majority of northern states imposing their views on others. It may also include issues such as the compulsory use of Hindi, which is strongly opposed by states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Division and Administrative Coordination of Uttar Pradesh

Referring to the huge population of Uttar Pradesh, Tharoor advocated the creation of small states instead of one big state. “Is it rational for a state to have a population of 28 crores?” He raised such a question. Recalling Mayawati’s proposal to divide Uttar Pradesh into four states when she was Chief Minister, he demanded more powers for the State Reorganization Commission. He believes that division of large states is the need of the hour for administrative ease and development.

BJP’s counterattack: Role of Annamalai and Tejashwi Surya

In this discussion BJP’s Tamil Nadu state president K. Annamalai and MP Tejashwi Surya responded to Tharoor’s allegations. Annamalai explained that as per the census data, proper representation of North India is a democratic requirement. While promising to protect the rights of South India, he emphasized the concept of ‘one nation’. However, there is a consensus among experts that the questions raised by Tharoor are not only political but are very important for the federal structure of India.
