There is a huge uproar over liquor shops in the residential areas of Jammu and Kashmir. Opposition parties in the Union Territory are continuously attacking the Omar Abdullah government and are raising questions on the moral thinking of the government. Meanwhile, a big statement has come from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. He has clearly said that these shops are for those whose religion allows drinking alcohol. Even before this, no government had banned these shops.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said, “It is my fault in this. This is how I talk to journalists on the roadside from time to time. Journalists ask questions for which the answer should be a little longer, but due to paucity of time, I give such an answer which the opposition people twist and present.”
CM Abdullah further said, “First of all, this shop is for those people whose religion allows them to drink alcohol. Secondly, till now no government in Jammu and Kashmir has banned these shops. This does not mean that we want it to be used more. Those who are allowed to drink alcohol, do so.”
Omar Abdullah further said, “Our religion does not allow us, nor do we want people to go in this direction. Therefore, in our government, we did two-three things. Firstly, we did not open any new shops. Secondly, we always tried to ensure that liquor shops should not be such places where our youth try to take the wrong path.”
He further said, “Now the opposition parties try to hide their mistakes regarding my statement. If what I said was so wrong then what did they do when they were in government? Because what I said in Ganderbal, the same thing was said by the then Finance Minister of PDP inside the House. It is on record.”
Omar Abdullah made it clear that liquor shops are not meant to instigate the people of Jammu and Kashmir. He said, “I reiterate that this shop is not for everyone. People with different mindsets live in Jammu and Kashmir. People of different religions live. Even people coming from outside also live here. These shops are for them, not for the local people.”
