After their recent defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), which officially ended their playoff aspirations, Mumbai Indians (MI) head coach Mahela Jayawardene discussed the choice to have the inexperienced Raj Angad Bawa bowl the crucial final over while defending a total of 167 runs. This season has been another letdown for MI, who have not been able to replicate their past successes since their last trophy win in 2020. Despite retaining many players from their championship-winning years, the team, led by Hardik Pandya, has struggled significantly with both batting and bowling, facing the possibility of finishing in the lower half of the standings for the third time this decade.
Coach Justifies Final Over Decision
In the post-match press conference, Mahela addressed the decision to let Raj bowl the final over, during which he conceded 15 runs, including extras and a six hit by Bhuvneshwar Kumar after dismissing Romario Shepherd. Mahela defended Raj, stating he is a 'decent bowler' and that all experienced bowlers had completed their overs. Raj's ability to execute wide yorkers in practice earned him the trust of stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav.
"We had limited spinners available. Surya had confidence in himself, and Raj is a capable bowler. He consistently executes wide yorkers in training. He maintained his line and took the wicket of Romario Shepherd, who was also under pressure. We fought hard; it was a close match. We should have executed better in the end," he remarked.
'We Were Not Good Enough'
Mahela described the season as 'disappointing' for MI, emphasizing their inconsistency despite having opportunities. "We were just a couple of wins away from being in contention for the playoffs. We failed to secure those wins, and today's match exemplified where we fell short," he noted.
MI batted first but struggled early, finding themselves at 28/3 due to Bhuvneshwar Kumar's exceptional bowling. An 82-run partnership between Naman Dhir and Tilak Varma helped stabilize the innings, but the final overs saw Raj and Corbin Bosch manage only 11 runs, leaving MI potentially short on runs. "We did our best. The pitch was uneven, and there was some dew at night. Our players were trying to hit big shots without knowing what a good score would be on this wicket, leading to several dot balls. We simply weren't good enough today," the coach explained.
Injuries and Forced Changes Impact Performance
The former Sri Lankan star mentioned that several players were dealing with minor injuries, and some, like Will Jacks, were unavailable for most matches. Key MI players, including skipper Hardik Sharma, Rohit Sharma, and Mitchell Santner, also faced injury issues during the tournament. "We had players with niggles, some were injured, and others were unavailable. Therefore, the changes were necessary. Tactically, we would have preferred to have a few more players available. There are no excuses. We have a talented squad, and we needed to step up and perform, which unfortunately did not happen," he stated.
Support for the Core Group
Despite the challenges, Mahela expressed confidence in his team, describing them as a 'quality unit.' He highlighted the commitment of core players like Rohit, Suryakumar, Hardik, Tilak Varma, and Jasprit Bumrah, who have put in significant effort. "Rohit has been battling injuries but continues to give his best. They have returned after playing in the World Cup and even winning it. This core group is invaluable to us," he concluded.
Match Summary: MI vs RCB
In the match, RCB won the toss and chose to bowl first. This decision proved effective as MI quickly fell to 28/3, thanks to Bhuvneshwar's exceptional performance. However, Naman Dhir (47 off 32 balls, with five fours and two sixes) and Tilak Varma (57 off 42, with three fours and two sixes) formed an 82-run partnership, helping MI reach 166/7 in their 20 overs. Bhuvneshwar was the standout bowler for RCB, taking 4 wickets for 23 runs.
During the chase, RCB lost Virat Kohli for a second consecutive golden duck and found themselves at 39/3, with Deepak Chahar (2/33) controlling the game. Krunal Pandya (73 off 46 balls, with four boundaries and five sixes) formed a 55-run partnership with Jacob Bethell (26 off 27 balls) and another 38-run partnership with Jitesh Sharma (18), showcasing a strong counter-attack.
However, Corbin Bosch (4/26) and Allah Ghazanfar (1/33) took crucial wickets, including Krunal, leaving RCB at 149/7 in the 18th over. Romario Shepherd struggled against Jasprit Bumrah, leaving RCB needing 12 runs in the final over. A series of extras from Raj Angad Bawa and a six from Bhuvneshwar eased the pressure, allowing RCB to secure a last-ball victory, with Rasikh Salam Dar hitting the winning runs.
With seven wins and four losses, RCB tops the points table with 14 points, while MI sits at ninth place with three wins and eight losses, officially eliminated from the playoff race alongside Lucknow Super Giants.
