Punjab Kings Struggle in IPL 2026: Bowling Woes and Fielding Errors
Gyanhigyan english | May 11, 2026 9:40 PM CST

The Punjab Kings kicked off their IPL 2026 campaign with an impressive start, winning six consecutive matches under the leadership of Shreyas Iyer. However, their momentum has faltered, leading to three consecutive losses. With 13 points from 10 matches, they remain in contention for the playoffs, but their chances could dwindle if their bowling and fielding do not improve. The decline in Punjab Kings' performance can be attributed to poor fast bowling and frequent dropped catches.

Fast Bowling Unit's Underwhelming Performance

The fast bowling unit, led by Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen, has been conceding runs at an alarming rate. In nine innings, they have allowed 200 runs or more six times, and three times they have exceeded 220 runs. The bowlers have an average of 46.47, with Punjab's seven fast bowlers managing only 33 wickets. Only the fast bowlers from Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians have performed worse. Kolkata Knight Riders' pace attack has also taken 33 wickets but boasts a much better bowling average of 28.57.

Jansen and Arshdeep's Struggles

Punjab Kings have recorded the worst economy rate of 10.68 this season. Among fast bowlers who have bowled 30 overs or more, Arshdeep and Jansen rank second and fifth for the worst economy rates, respectively. T Natarajan from Delhi Capitals has the worst economy overall. Jansen's average of 58.33 is the second worst, following Natarajan's 71.2. This season has been particularly challenging for Arshdeep, the head of Punjab's fast bowling department.

Decline in Top Performers

Punjab Kings feature top players like Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, Cooper Connolly, and captain Shreyas Iyer in their lineup. When in form, any of these players can single-handedly lead the team to victory. During the first six matches, including a rain-affected game against KKR, the top four players averaged 50.17 with a strike rate of 186.24, accumulating 853 runs in 20 innings, including nine half-centuries, with 71 fours and 59 sixes.

Reasons for Performance Decline

However, their statistics have dipped in the last four matches, with only 42 fours and 32 sixes hit off 294 balls. In these matches, Prabhsimran scored 3, 15, 59, and 76 runs, while Priyansh managed 1, 2, 29, and 43 runs. Connolly had a standout performance with an unbeaten 107 against Sunrisers Hyderabad but scored only 0, 30, and 17 in his previous three innings. Captain Shreyas Iyer has also struggled, scoring 5, 19, 30, and an unbeaten 71 in his last four innings. Despite these challenges, there is no cause for alarm as these batsmen are playing high-risk cricket.

Fielding Issues

Fielding has been another area of concern for Punjab Kings in IPL 2026, with players dropping 16 catches. Shashank Singh has been responsible for five dropped catches. The team's catch success rate is the lowest in the league at 71.43 percent.

Underutilization of Spin Bowlers

Despite having the league's top bowler, Yuzvendra Chahal, Punjab Kings have not utilized their spin bowlers effectively. Harpreet Brar is another option, yet the team has failed to make the most of their spin resources. In 10 matches, they have bowled only 34 overs with spinners, the least among all teams, taking 8 wickets at an average of 38.87 and an economy of 9.14. Brar has played only one match, and Chahal has not completed his quota of overs four times.

Krunal Pandya's Desire for Indian Team Comeback

Krunal Pandya, who has played five ODIs for India, scored 130 runs at an average of 65.00 and a strike rate of 101.56 across four innings. He made an impressive debut, scoring an unbeaten 58, which was the fastest fifty by an Indian on debut.
