Guwahati, May 11: With the highly anticipated swearing-in ceremony of the BJP-led NDA government in Assam approaching, a well-known family of craftsmen is diligently working to create the impressive stage for the event. This stage will welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union ministers, Chief Ministers from 22 states, and various dignitaries.
The stage, specifically designed for Himanta Biswa Sarma's second term as Assam's Chief Minister, is being constructed under the guidance of celebrated artist and Padma Shri awardee Nuruddin Ahmed, alongside his sons, Raj and Deep Ahmed.
Located at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara, Guwahati, the stage is currently under construction in preparation for the oath-taking ceremony.
Deep Ahmed, Nuruddin's younger son, shared insights about the preparations, noting the family's significant role amidst a tight schedule and extensive arrangements involving numerous agencies.
“Numerous government departments and prominent figures are part of the preparations for the swearing-in ceremony, and we are focused on the stage construction,” he explained.
Deep mentioned that work on the stage commenced just a couple of days ago, presenting a considerable challenge to complete the project on time.
“We began work the day before yesterday, and with the ceremony set for tomorrow, it’s quite a challenge for us,” he added.
Despite the pressure, the team is striving to incorporate a strong Assamese cultural identity and traditional aesthetics into the stage design.
“Given the presence of significant figures from the Centre and various states, we aimed to add a local touch to the stage. Our design reflects Assam’s festivals, culture, and lifestyle,” Deep stated.
He elaborated that the main stage features elements symbolizing the Indian Parliament, while the side stages showcase indigenous Assamese culture and the architectural essence of satras.
Deep also noted that approximately 70% of the work has been completed, despite concerns about adverse weather conditions.
“Time is limited, and adverse weather has been a concern, but the situation seems to be improving today,” he remarked.
Discussing his father's involvement, Deep mentioned that the veteran artist is actively overseeing the project despite other commitments.
“My father is closely monitoring the work and is also engaged with other responsibilities. He provides suggestions for modifications, while my brother and I are dedicated to the project,” he said.
“We are optimistic that the public will appreciate the stage this time,” he added.
Nuruddin Ahmed is celebrated as a pioneer of modern Assamese stagecraft, with his work being showcased throughout the state via Assam’s renowned mobile theatre movement.
Recently, alongside his sons, he played a vital role in the Batadrava Than Cultural Project, creating large murals and sculptures inspired by Assam’s Vaishnavite spiritual heritage and the teachings of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev.
The trio has crafted intricate artworks throughout the complex, including depictions from sacred texts like the Bhagavata and Kirtan, majestic Dashavatar sculptures, representations of Gayan Bayan traditions, and artistic recreations of satra culture.
Having dedicated over five decades to visual art and stage design, Nuruddin Ahmed was honored as a Padma Shri recipient on the eve of Republic Day 2026.
