Princess Catherine will travel overseas this week with a solo visit to Reggio Emilia in Northern Italy. The visit will be the 44-year-old's first overseas trip since 2023, and her first since her cancer diagnosis in early 2024.
Travelling on behalf of The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, Catherine will be studying the "Reggio Emilia Approach," an educational philosophy focusing on community-based, early-years education that emphasizes nature, creativity, and the role of the child. The trip follows her previous work on early childhood development and aligns with her efforts to promote outdoor learning and human connection over excessive screen time for children.
Here, the Daily Express looks at everything we need to know about Catherine's upcoming Italian visit.
Princess Catherine will arrive in Italy on May 13, and will be there until May 14.
She will be travelling alone, without her husband, Prince William.
The future King will stay in the UK to care for the couple's three children, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, eight.
Catherine, who revealed she was in remission at the start of last year, will head to Italy on a solo working trip with The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood.
The visit will focus on early childhood development and is part of a "fact-finding mission" to study the internationally recognised "Reggio Emilia Approach".
They added that the Princess of Wales will see "first-hand how the Reggio Emilia approach creates environments where nature and loving human relationships come together to support children's development". During the trip, the future Queen will be meeting with educators, parents, children, local representatives and business leaders.
Aides to the royal have shared how she was "very much looking forward" to getting back to international travel. They also added that the visit was an important moment in the expansion of the Centre for Early Childhood's work on a global stage.
She last carried out an official overseas visit in December 2022 when she went to Boston, USA, with Prince William for his Earthshot Prize award ceremony.
She also undertook two brief trips to Marseille, France, for the Rugby World Cup in the autumn of 2023.
Catherine also went to the Crown Prince of Jordan's wedding in Amman in June 2023 but these were not considered by her royal household to be official foreign tours.
As of early 2025, Catherine announced that she is in remission following her cancer diagonsis in March 2024.
She completed her chemotherapy treatment in September 2024 and has since resumed a limited, gradual return to public duties, focusing on her continued recovery.
