Surat :Four persons drowned in a river near the Kakrapar dam in Gujarat's Surat district, police said on Tuesday.
Kaushik Chaudhary (23) took his cattle to the river on Monday morning and did not return till late in the evening, causing alarm, said inspector Jayesh Valvi of Mandvi police station.
His brother, an uncle and a friend started a search for him and found his clothes on the riverbank on Tuesday morning, he said.
Thinking that he might have drowned, they jumped into the river to look for him but were caught in a vortex and drowned themselves, Valvi said.
The fire department and local police retrieved the bodies of all four persons after hours of efforts.
Three of the deceased belonged to the nearby Vakala village, while another person was from Kanja village, the police official said.
"The bodies have been sent to the local government hospital for postmortem examination," inspector Valvi said.
