Far Cry 7 leaks, rumours, and what we know so far
Reach Daily Express | May 12, 2026 8:40 PM CST

With almost five years since the release of the last major Far Cry game, Ubisoft fans are eager to learn more about what the next entry in the series has in store.

The French publisher hasn't revealed anything about Far Cry 7 publicly yet, although its CEO Yves Guillemot did confirm that there are currently two projects in the works. In an interview with Variety earlier this year, Guillemot said: "On Far Cry, anticipation is high, and we currently have two very promising projects in development."

He didn't divulge any further details, but there have been plenty of leaks and rumours over the last few years that give us some sort of idea where the franchise is headed next - and it sounds like Ubisoft could be switching things up in a big way.

So, here's everything we've heard about Far Cry 7 so far. Please bear in mind that Ubisoft is yet to announce anything officially yet, and that all of these leaks and rumours are speculation at this point.

Far Cry 7 might be set in Alaska, or the Mexican jungle

As Guillemot mentioned, there are currently two Far Cry projects in the works. One is believed to be Far Cry 7, a single-player focused affair, while the other is thought to be a multiplayer extraction game.

Back in late 2025, images were found in the game files of XDefiant that seem to point towards the setting of one of these games. The images show what appears to be Mayan monuments in a dense jungle.

Insider Gaming reports that these screenshots are apparently from the multiplayer Far Cry game, with Henderson suggesting that Far Cry 7 will actually take place in the Alaskan tundra.

One of the images found in the leak appears to show a family photograph of a wealthy family, which is thought to be a nod towards the narrative of Far Cry 7. It's thought that we'll be playing as one of the members of this family, with the rest of our kin kidnapped by a mysterious 'Sons of Truth' cult.

This leads us onto what's thought to be an innovative new gameplay mechanic for the single-player game...

Far Cry 7 might be a race against time

While previous Far Cry games have let players run amok around the playspace, tackling missions and side quests as we please, it's thought that the upcoming title will put pressure on the player to make more informed decisions about how they spend their time.

Also reported by Insider Gaming, it's thought that Far Cry 7 will adopt a non-linear structure with players given three days to track down and rescue each of their family members. While the exact details are subject to change, this will reportedly equate to roughly 24 hours of real time.

Apparently, players will be able to rescue each of their family members in any order, with the potential for members to die. It's thought that the result of each mission will affect the outcome of the story.

This structure is likely to be similar to Far Cry 5, which also lets players tackle some missions in any order they like.

Recently, a leaked audio clip that's reportedly linked to Far Cry 7 seems to confirm this time limit mechanic. Posted by prominent Ubisoft leaker 'Rogue' on X, the audio seems to feature a prominent ticking clock, hinting towards time being a key resource and mechanic in the upcoming title.

We weren't able to verify the source of this audio file, though, so take it with a pinch of salt.

Time limits in games isn't a brand new idea with the likes of Dead Rising leaning heavily on the mechanic in the past. However, this would be the first time this has appeared in a Far Cry game, and would take the series in a new direction, perhaps closer towards the more hardcore survival themes of Far Cry 2.

Out with Dunia, in with Snowdrop

Ever since Far Cry 2, the games have been built in the proprietary Dunia engine. While this has worked well for the open-world formula until now, it's thought that Ubisoft is making the switch to Massive's Snowdrop engine for Far Cry 7.

This is the same engine that was originally built for The Division back in 2016. However, the engine has since been used for several other Ubisoft projects, including Star Wars Outlaws, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and Mario and Rabbids: Kingdom Battle.

Given the huge gulf of time between Far Cry 6 and its upcoming sequel, the transition to a new engine could be partially to blame for the delay in development. However, given how well the game's formula seemed to slot into the Snowdrop engine for Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, the wait could be worth it.

Cillian Murphy may or may not be the Far Cry 7 villain

One aspect of Far Cry 7 that's been hotly debated is whether the actor Cillian Murphy will make his gaming debut as the game's main villain. Far Cry games are known for their iconic head honcho's with 3's Vaas widely thought to be one of gaming's most iconic characters.

Far Cry 6 saw Breaking Bad star Giancarlo Esposito take up the villainous role, so it's thought that Ubisoft would be keen to track down more Hollywood talent to lead its sequel.

Reports from 2024 seemed to pin Murphy, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan's biopic, as taking on the role of the villain in Far Cry 7. However, this claim has since been disputed by insiders close to the project.

Do we know when Far Cry 7 will be released?

Ubisoft is yet to announce a release date for Far Cry 7 just yet. However, with the last game in the series launching back in 2021, it's thought that the publisher is hoping to get the project out of the door soon.

With no official communication from the developer, we can't put a concrete prediction on a release date just yet. Ubisoft leaker Rogue seemed to tease that a late 2026 release date is on the cards.

However, given this would pit the game directly against GTA 6, I would imagine Ubisoft would be quite happy to let this one slip until 2027.

With Summer Games Fest set to take place on June 5, 2026, there's every chance that Ubisoft is saving a big announcement for the show.

We'll report back when we learn more official details about Far Cry 7.
